Printed materials transmitted electronically over the internet are prepared
in a format called, "Portable Document File", or "PDF". In order to view these
files, it is necessary to have Adobe Acrobat Reader software installed on your
computer. This software is available free from the Adobe web site and can be
easily downloaded to allow you access to files in PDF format. Files received in
this format can be viewed, saved or printed, but cannot be changed or modified.
Following are instructions on how to download Adobe Acrobat Reader from the
internet and how to access PDF files which you receive via email.
Downloading Adobe Acrobat from the Internet
1 - Log on to the Internet.
2 - Click on the icon to the left to go to the
Adobe website.

3 - Scroll to the bottom of the page. Click on the button, "Adobe, Get
Acrobat Reader."
4 - On the left side of this page, click on, "Text-only Acrobat Reader
download page".
5 - On the top of this page, click on, "Acrobat 5.0 Reader: English".
6 - Click on, "Acrobat Reader 5.0 for Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0 and 2000
8.6 MB".
7 - A pop up box will appear asking where you want to save this download.
Select "Save Program to Disk" and click on "OK". When the "Save
As" window appears, select the file on your hard drive (such as My Documents
or Downloads) where you want to save the program. (Note – file name is
"ar500enu.exe".)
8 - Once the download is complete, open the folder where you saved the
download and double-click on the file. This will start the set-up of Adobe
Acrobat Reader.
9 - Follow all on screen instructions and when the installation is
complete, you will have Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Accessing PDF Files via Email
1 - When an email is sent to you with an attachment that contains a file with
the extension ".pdf" at the end of the file name, this means it is a PDF file.
2 - To open a PDF document, double-click on the icon attachment in your email
message. A window box will appear, titled, "Opening Mail Attachment",
containing a message, "What would you like to do with this file?" There
are two options: "Open it to disk" or "Save it to Disk". Click on
the desired location.
3 - If you select, "Save it to Disk", a "Save As" window
will open to allow you to indicate where you want to save the file. If you
select "Open It", Acrobat Reader will open the file allowing you to view
it, but it will not be saved.
4 - The document is displayed exactly as it would appear in the printed
version, including layout, fonts, graphics, tables and pictures. |
